Forty is the birthday where a joke about age is almost compulsory, as long as it lands. The card can tease about the first grey hairs or celebrate 40 as a fresh start full of energy and new plans. You can also enter a custom size in mm or cm, portrait or landscape. A6 fits a C6 envelope, DL fits a DL envelope. You can put your wishes on the back.

Funny 40th birthday card: ideas for the picture

Humour works best when it is about their hobbies or habits, not only their age. Describe one idea rather than five, and the illustration stays clear.

• A car dashboard showing 40 with the caption: mileage within normal range.
• A cake with 40 candles and a fire extinguisher standing by.
• A battery at 40% and the words: power saving mode on.
• Their favourite pastime: cycling, fishing, the barbecue, the guitar or the cat who runs the house.

40th birthday card for him and for her

For him, try a dark background in navy or bottle green with a motif from his hobby. For her, flowers, blush pink with gold or modern lettering around the number 40. These are only starting points: if she loves motorbikes and he paints watercolours, put that in your brief.

For a card handed over at a party, print A6 or A5. If the guests will sign it, pick A5 and add a back with blank space.
